It is hard to believe that tomorrow is already Thursday. How fast the week went by. The only reason I know it is really Thursday tomorrow is because today is my youngest sister’s birthday.
In my family I must be the only one who does not celebrate a birthday because it is way too close past the holidays. By that time everyone is trying to lose weight and tired of eating. But the 9th is a little past the holidays and people have a tendency to get past their gluttony of Christmas and New Year.
I hardly see my sister because she is always hard at work – she works two jobs most days. She does not have children but if there’s anyone who’s so generous in helping out my nephews and nieces go to college – she’s the one. While I carried the burden of taking care of the needs of my Mom when she was sick, this time it is my youngest sister’s turn to take care of the other members of the family. My other sister too in the Philippines took the brunt of caregiving during the last 9 months of our mother’s life and she is the guardian to our nieces and nephews. Like my youngest sister, she too never complains.
My sister has an open palm. She’d always say, as long as there’s something to share – just give. She’s always so selfless, patient, just the best sister one could have. She was there too to help me when I was taking care of our mother – we lived an hour apart but she tried to be there whenever she could. I could not have asked for more.
Am so glad that she’s off today, which rarely happens. So we went to try this Japanese Restaurant which I’ve heard a lot about. I had high expectations going there but it was a big disappointment. The service was very slow and the food was not the best Japanese I’ve ever had. Well at least I know I will not be going back there again.
My sister loved her order though and that was all that mattered and I got to spend quality time with her and her husband.

Happy birthday to your sis Lou! All my life, yan ang na-miss ko, a real sister because I am the only girl in a family of three boys!
You and Baby are so much alike – selfless and giving. Happy birthday Baby!
Wonderful tribute to your sister …. happy new year to her. That Udon soup – great shot. Like Japaneses food, but not a sushi fan – had a friend that nearly died from bad sushi (rice one of the most dangerous food there is if not treated right) … and after that I don’t take chance, but they have so much good to offer. Any tempura make my day. Lovely post and great shots.
I longed for an elder sister in my case because I am the oldest. I have a distant cousin whose family moved at my grandparents’ house, right across the house where I grew up in Ilocos. She was the only girl in the family of 6. She was a great role model and up until now she’s the eldest sister I never had. I don’t think it matters much that a person is a blood relation, I think it is the relationship that we establish with that person. Am sure you have someone among your friends who’s as close to you like a sister.
Thanks Wi. I will tell her about your birthday greeting. My sister is a saint, am subject to moods. LOL
I wonder what was wrong with the rice. I’ve been a rice eating person since I was born. I would think that there was something wrong with the fish more than the rice but any respectable sushi chef wouldn’t use any fish below their very high standards.
My sister loves udon, she said it reminds her of our trip together to bring home our mother. We had an overnight layover in Japan and that’s what she had.
Rice is one of the most dangerous food items – if not clean hands has been used or tools, if the rice has fluctuate in temperatures. As an executive chef, I had to make sure that we to keep boiled rice for 24 hours – and NOT reheated it. Same with any cooked noodles, because they are egg based.
In rice bacterial by 20.000 per minute.
You food shots really good.
Yes rice spoils easily especially in humid and hot temperatures. That is why in the Phils. rice is normally all eaten to the next meal, nothing beyond. Thank you Viveka, the pictures were taken with an iphone.
Are you from Vigan? I saw a lot of Vigan food and wonder if it was vegan or Vigan in Punas.
My friends are from Vigan, Ilocos Sur. If you saw a lot of Vigan food then you know they are not vegans.
Was born in Pinas but never been to Vigan. Do they know the Saygan family?
I will have to ask Lydia.
