A-Word-A-Week Photo Challenge: Old

I know exactly what picture to show “old” in Sue’s challenge.

Old photos of two of the most influential people in my life: my paternal grandparents.

One time when I went home, displayed in the walls of our ancestral home were pictures of my grandmother when she was young and my grandpa. I am so glad that I was able to take photos of them.

Growing up, Grandma was the first mother I knew as she and my grandfather nurtured me since I was a baby. My parents married young and while they went to college, my grandparents took care of me.

As a pre-schooler I didn’t have any idea of who my parents were. I was so much loved that I was happy and content with what I had.

My grandma and I stayed in the farm. She taught me a lot and she built my character for the way I am now. She was a generous and nurturing person but at the same time she knew how to be tough when she was dealing with our tenants. She could be feisty and fearless but everyone respected her.

Below is a photo of my grandfather. He was my hero and I had a big crush on him. I adored my grandfather, he was the most handsome man I knew when I was kid. Growing up as a teenager I prayed I would fall in love with someone like him. He was a man of few words but when he talked, everyone listened. If my father adored my grandma, he respected his dad and would never do anything to hurt their feelings nor embarrass them.

When I was of school age, my grandma decided I have to live in the big town (it is now a city) so I could get proper education. I could have stayed in the town where I grew up but most of the teachers were related to us, they didn’t want me to be a favored student because of my relations to my teachers. So during the school year, my grandfather and I stayed in the province where he was a city treasurer, but spending summer and Christmas holidays with my grandma. With us too was my Auntie Caring (she’s a whole blog altogether).

When my grandfather retired from his government work, he was able to live in our farm with my grandma. Grandma loved my grandfather so much but they have sacrificed so much for their children and me.

I really miss them! Wherever they are, I hope they are blissfully happy at last.

I loved your grandmother’s dresses. As soon as I saw that first picture on A Word In Your Ear, I thought, this blogger must be Filipino. πŸ™‚ Both my grandmothers lived with my family off-and-on while I was growing up. It is a great blessing to have access to loving, extended family members. Thanks for the story!

That’s why my grandfather fell in love with her. Actually my grandfather married someone else that his parents preferred but she died while giving birth to my Auntie Caring. My grandmother was heartbroken and decided to travel outside of our province as a merchant. Eventually after his first wife died, my grandpa married my grandmother.

I thought they were gorgeous in the old days. No make up, real simple. You were lucky to have grown up with your grandmothers. I am grateful to have been raised by her; my maternal grandma was very sweet and thoughtful too but I saw her only occasionally in Manila as they were from Mindoro.

They say grandparents are better at spoiling their grandchildren, they are very strict with their own.
