Plainfield Library

A little disappointed that I didn’t receive my Kindle G3 before the weekend, I was restless by Saturday. I wanted so much to read, a hunger that could only be satisfied by holding a book. I had a Chicago magazine but that only filled my half hour and even when I pushed myself to imagine the places they suggested to visit for long weekends, it was just not enough. Besides, you also imagine taking a trip costs a lot of money. Books afford one to dream and escape for free.

The library is only 3 miles away situated in the old town of Plainfield. It is in an old beautiful brick building with Greek columns. When I first drove there I thought it was a bank but the GPS was right.

My first two trips to this library were not all that great. The first time, I had to prematurely drop the book I borrowed from my former library. It was a hardbound book by Ken Follett and it was too heavy to lug around to/from work so I was diminished to reading it when I got home. I was only on the third chapter when they said I could not renew it as it was reserved already by another person.

The second time on a Sunday, hoping I could take out the same book again, there were many of us that waited until someone said they are actually closed on Sundays during the summer.

And that was it. The next day I went and ordered my Kindle.

For the meantime I had to pay a visit to the library one more time. I wanted to verify how I could borrow ebooks from them and I was glad I did. I learned a few things that day.

And even though this is a much smaller and older library from where I was last, this has its charm. And I probably won’t be able to read all the books there in my lifetime so size is not a big deal. It was very homey, cozy and the volunteer workers there are very friendly and helpful.

Their walls are covered with autographed photos of authors some I hardly heard of but many I recognized.

And of course, I left after I was able to secure another library card and a couple of hardbound books.

One of my friends once asked me what I would miss most in the States when I finally go home to retire: unequivocally – the library. I am grateful that I could live in a country where I could just take out books for free.

[I really doubt this is the best title I could give to this journal entry but I need to get back to the book am reading. Nope, not on Kindle.]
