Plainfield Library

A little disappointed that I didn’t receive my Kindle G3 before the weekend, I was restless by Saturday. I wanted so much to read, a hunger that could only be satisfied by holding a book. I had a Chicago magazine but that only filled my half hour and even when I pushed myself to imagine the places they suggested to visit for long weekends, it was just not enough. Besides, you also imagine taking a trip costs a lot of money. Books afford one to dream and escape for free.

The library is only 3 miles away situated in the old town of Plainfield. It is in an old beautiful brick building with Greek columns. When I first drove there I thought it was a bank but the GPS was right.

My first two trips to this library were not all that great. The first time, I had to prematurely drop the book I borrowed from my former library. It was a hardbound book by Ken Follett and it was too heavy to lug around to/from work so I was diminished to reading it when I got home. I was only on the third chapter when they said I could not renew it as it was reserved already by another person.

The second time on a Sunday, hoping I could take out the same book again, there were many of us that waited until someone said they are actually closed on Sundays during the summer.

And that was it. The next day I went and ordered my Kindle.

For the meantime I had to pay a visit to the library one more time. I wanted to verify how I could borrow ebooks from them and I was glad I did. I learned a few things that day.

And even though this is a much smaller and older library from where I was last, this has its charm. And I probably won’t be able to read all the books there in my lifetime so size is not a big deal. It was very homey, cozy and the volunteer workers there are very friendly and helpful.

Their walls are covered with autographed photos of authors some I hardly heard of but many I recognized.

And of course, I left after I was able to secure another library card and a couple of hardbound books.

One of my friends once asked me what I would miss most in the States when I finally go home to retire: unequivocally – the library. I am grateful that I could live in a country where I could just take out books for free.

[I really doubt this is the best title I could give to this journal entry but I need to get back to the book am reading. Nope, not on Kindle.]

  1. Lou, I just love how i literally found myself where you were through your pictures. Maybe you can put up a library of your own up there in the summer capital when you go home for good… just a thought…

I envy you Lou for having access to public libraries there. That’s one thing which is not given priorities here. Kaya tignan mo pati mga kabataan hindi mahilig magbasa unless the family is into it and they pick it up from their parents. They prefer playing games on the net than reading. And I agree with pinayworker 🙂

Not just books but a lot of activities for kids. TJ enjoys the library thanks to mare. Most of his reads are borrowed from the library.

Dinna, am not good at keeping books especially if they are fiction. I give them away to my friends who I know would read them. The only ones I have a collection are cookbooks. Esp. now that I am constantly moving, there’s the problem of temporary storage.

Arlene, when I was in high school our small town had a small library manned by someone part-time. Me and a handful of cousins, I found out just recently, enjoyed the books there. But you are right, it is not a priority and that library have long closed. I hope writers will just keep on writing so we all have something to read even if they are through electronics although I would prefer a paper copy.

Can’t remember when I was at a library last time .. *smile … and I have one across the road.
Great post about something that we all should really visit more often, because there is something special about a library. Your photo shares the atmosphere.

Thank you Viveka. I made an appointment to get a tutorial on my Kindle. It looks like the one I want to borrow from the library is not on Kindle format unless I get it from Amazon. If my choices are that limited, I might still end up borrowing books in the library. I hope there’s enough that I could get through my library so they’re free.

The library not just have books, they now carry all kind of media. Movies, music, etc. Try it, you might not want to leave your library after that.

Having lived in Plainfield for three years, I have to say that the Library is one of the biest things about Plainfield, no longer the old town feel that it used to be, but the library will always have a way to pull a community back to its roots. This is god stuff, Tita bebot!

I really like that library. It is very intimate and because it is very small, it is very friendly. It is like being in a house and I like how they just improved on the building. I like its warmth. Are you back Fr Sunny?
