We spent a good deal of time preparing our share for the picnic, drove 2.5 hours to Coloma, Michigan only to find out that the cherries left for picking were the tart cherries. We went to Fruit Acres. We were a week late along with many other people who came from as far away as we did.
But the tart cherries were pretty to look at, sour though and they were cheap if you are into making pies. I have never been successful in making a pie so I am not going to start now.
The Fruit Acres owner was very gracious, he welcomed us in his orchard, explaining the circumstances, he said we could try looking for black cherries if some were left but we are not that nimble and light anymore to do that. Some young kids were good at it but they didn’t even fill up their box.
Next year we swear, we’ll be there on time. Or better yet, call first before you go. We didn’t, we’re looking for an excuse to get out of town.
We had our picnic in a covered tent provided by the orchard and the weather was very nice. Everyone brought a lot of food, we ended up taking home most of them. After lunch and photo ops, we planned where else to go.
Good thing there’s a lot to do in Michigan. We were hell bent on making it a fun day for all of us!
