Dailypost photo challenge: texture

DSC_0336Here’s my entry for the week on Texture.

Above is a baby bottle gourd with a flower at the tip. The petals are soft and silky but everything else in the gourd plant is rough and hairy, even the leaves.

Nowadays, nothing gives me so much more pleasure than be in the garden. I try to watch every growth, every bloom. They all look so promising now – the tomatoes and gourd has plenty of blooms, we have harvested several zukes and tomorrow I will bring one and some Hungarian peppers to share at work. I think we are going to have a bounty.

But like an expectant mother, am waiting for the Asian long beans to bloom. I hope to enjoy them before they die in the Fall.

The squirrels has been feeding on my eggplant. Viv got some spray so they stay away but upon reading the instructions I decided it is not the good way to go. There was a warning not to apply to any plants that’s for human consumption. Instead I wrapped the baby eggplants in paper towel to hide them from the animals – keeping my fingers crossed that it works.

We’ve harvested three but they have consumed more than their fair share so I am trying to find a better way so we all get to enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Anyone out there with a better organic suggestion?

Loved the detail in this photo, down to the hairs! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on gardening as well and wonder if you have considered setting up a temporary green house type structure (in Barbados that would be 4 poles covered with a green or black netting) to protect your plants? This seems to work well not only against predators with 4 legs – monkeys, cats, etc. – but also birds. Just a suggestion and here’s my take on the challenge this week – enjoy (but don’t forget to let me know how the harvesting goes)! http://galeweithers.wordpress.com/2014/08/11/touchy-feely-textures/

I know. They are all blooming now, even the long beans have a couple of blooms too already so hopefully come September we’ll have plenty to share.

The garden space is really tight galeweithers. I have intermixed the vegetables with the perennials so there is no room to add any shelter to cover them from predators or night raiders. I wish there’s some space so we have to wrap the eggplants with paper. That’s how they do it in the Philippines so the birds won’t eat them. I hope it works otherwise our investment in time and water, fertilizer, etc. will all go to waste. Thanks for visiting.
